Enroll/Cost

All registered International students, scholars or other persons with a current passport and student visa engaged in educational activities at UNT Denton are eligible and must be enrolled in the insurance plan on a hard waiver basis. This includes International students enrolled in Intensive English Language Institute (IELI), Curricular Practical Training, Internship, Practicum, Study Abroad or other credit or non-credit activity as a bona fide UNT student. International students participating in Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Academic Training (AT) are eligible to enroll on a voluntary basis for up to a year (unless approved for one additional year) Students must have been enrolled in SHIP coverage while in the OPT/AT program, they must provide proof of their loss of coverage to re-enroll in SHIP.

Eligible dependents of enrolled International Students may participate in the plan on a voluntary basis but must be enrolled during the open enrollment periods listed below:

The University of North Texas provides health insurance coverage for its doctoral and terminal degree programs through the Doctoral/MFA Assistantship Insurance Coverage Program.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Admitted to a PhD or MFA program, and
• Hired as an RA, TA, TF, or GSA at 20 hours/week (0.5 FTE). Must be hired and on payroll by the 12th class day of the semester (census day), and
• Enrolled in at least 9 credit hours (or meet one of the full-time exceptions noted in (UNT Policy 06.020).
  
  

All Doctoral and MFA students are required to enroll in University of North Texas Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) unless a waiver is submitted and approved.

All international students, scholars, and others at UNT Denton with a current passport and student visa (F‑1, J‑1) are automatically enrolled in the UNT Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). This requirement can only be waived in very limited circumstances (insert waiver link). This requirement applies to all student visa holders participating in the Intensive English Language Institute (IELI), Curricular Practical Training (CPT), internships, practicums, study abroad, or any other credit or non-credit activity as a bona fide UNT student.

After graduation, international students participating in Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Academic Training (AT) may enroll in continuation coverage on a voluntary basis. The process for enrolling and maintaining coverage depends on your situation, and you may enroll for up to one year (with a possible one-year extension if approved) as follows:

Students and their dependents must enroll at the same time, and enrollment is only allowed during the designated open enrollment periods.
